I am curious about people, especially how they interact with the environment and world around them. Most of my research is focused on the ancient civilizations of the Eastern Mediterranean world , Near East, and the Nile River (Egypt and Sudan).



Diving the Pyramids



As a result of modern climate change, agricultural activity, and the construction of dams, the subterranean burial chambers of many pyramids built near the Nile River are now underwater. My teams are scuba diving and excavating these tombs, re-writing their lost history.

Ancient Napata & The Kingdom of Kush


I direct the archaeological excavations at the ancient pyramids of Nuri, Sudan. Nuri was the royal cemetery for the biblical pharaoh of Egypt Taharqa and the Kingdom of Kush's Napatan era (ca. 700-300 BC).


The resting place for at least 60 pharaohs, Nubian kings, and queens, among hundreds of other individuals, today Nuri is UNESCO World Heritage Site.


Human & Environmental Interactions



How people have used, abused, amended, and tended the natural resources around them (or failed to do so) is a remarkable chapter in the history of humanity.


Through archaeological and proxy environmental data (such as tree rings), we can better understand this history to improve our future.
